摘要:Many areas of active exploration in Australia are characterised by a paucity of information on the groundwater resources present. This lack of knowledge commonly extends to the aquifers present, the variability and sustainability of the resource and its relationship to environmental and cultural assets. Access to water is a key infrastructure needs for mine developments in many of these regions these regions. Consequently the exploration and mining industry are increasingly inclined to embrace initiatives that seek to exploit “exploration” geophysical data sets for environmental purposes including, particularly where groundwater is concerned.However, the conjunctive use of exploration data sets is not always without its problems, not least because the choice of systems, and approaches to data interpretation, for targeting mineralisation and/or determining aquifer variability and groundwater quality, are not necessarily the same. This paper considers the issues and the challenge involved in the conjunctive use of exploration data sets. These include, for example, the desire to have data from well categorised systems when trying to characterise aquifers and groundwater. With reference to examples from outback Western and South Australia, we examine the consequences for groundwater studies when taking different approaches to the pre-processing of data from an airborne EM system (SKyTEM and SPECTREM) selected for exploration purposes.
